Prostaglandins are responsible for the inflammatory processes which lead to pain and fever. Mefenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medicine. It does three things in our bodies: it lowers pain, reduces inflammation and stops your body temperature from rising.

This medicine targets natural chemicals called cyclo-oxygenase enzymes, or COX enzymes for short. It blocks the effect of these enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) and stops them from producing a substance called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are pain-related chemicals that are made at the site of injury or inflammation. The pain sensation is reduced when they are blocked or inhibited by medicines like mefenamic acid or ibuprofen.

Mefenamic acid specifically targets the synthesis of prostaglandins in the uterus lining, which is why it is prescribed for women with menstrual cramps (period pain) and excessive bleeding during periods.

Drotaverine is an antispasmodic medicine that reduces spasms (cramps) of the smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary parts of the body. It works by blocking an enzyme called phosphodiesterase 4 which causes a rise in the levels of cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) in the body. The increase of cAMP results in the relaxation of smooth muscles and prevents the occurrences of spasms (cramps).

Together, mefenamic acid and drotaverine reduce pain in the body by reducing two processes that produce most of the pain that we might experience in our daily lives: inflammation and spasms.
