Uses of Splint Spas Tablet

Splint Spas Tablet treats moderate to severe pain caused by spasms and inflammations. It blocks pain-inducing chemicals and relaxes smooth muscles (to treat spastic pain). This medicine contains mefenamic acid and drotaverine; together, they alleviate symptoms like menstrual cramps (period pain), headaches, pain associated with gallstones and kidney stones, body pain, excessive menstrual bleeding, etc.

Splint Spas Tablet is prescribed to treat pain in conditions including the following:

How Splint Spas Tablet works

This medication works by relaxing the smooth muscles (to treat spastic pain) and preventing the production of a chemical called prostaglandin (to treat inflammation and pain). Prostaglandins are responsible for the inflammatory processes which lead to pain and fever. Thus, this medicine treats all pain-related symptoms like headaches, joint pain, muscle cramps, abdominal cramps, menstrual cramps (period pain) and excessive menstrual bleeding.

Splint Spas Tablet includes two active ingredients: mefenamic acid and drotaverine. Let’s look at what they do individually to understand how they work when combined.

Mefenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medicine. It does three things in our bodies: it lowers pain, reduces inflammation and stops your body temperature from rising.

This medicine targets natural chemicals called cyclo-oxygenase enzymes, or COX enzymes for short. It blocks the effect of these enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) and stops them from producing a substance called prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are pain-related chemicals that are made at the site of injury or inflammation. The pain sensation is reduced when they are blocked or inhibited by medicines like mefenamic acid or ibuprofen.

Mefenamic acid specifically targets the synthesis of prostaglandins in the uterus lining, which is why it is prescribed for women with menstrual cramps (period pain) and excessive bleeding during periods.

Drotaverine is an antispasmodic medicine that reduces spasms (cramps) of the smooth muscles in the gastrointestinal and genitourinary parts of the body. It works by blocking an enzyme called phosphodiesterase 4 which causes a rise in the levels of cAMP (cyclic adenosine monophosphate) in the body. The increase of cAMP results in the relaxation of smooth muscles and prevents the occurrences of spasms (cramps).

Together, mefenamic acid and drotaverine reduce pain in the body by reducing two processes that produce most of the pain that we might experience in our daily lives: inflammation and spasms.

Dosage

Always take Splint Spas Tablet medicine as advised by your doctor. Never consume more than the prescribed daily dose. Swallow the tablet as a whole with ample water; do not chew or crush. Take this medicine after food to reduce the chances of stomach upset.
