Gemclave DS Syrup

Gemclave DS Syrup is a combination antibiotic drug used to treat bacterial infections in the lungs, nose, ears and urinary tract. It is a combination of amoxicillin (an antibiotic) and clavulanic acid (a medicine that increases the effectiveness of amoxicillin). This medication is also prescribed in cases such as perforated appendicitis, intra-abdominal infections, preoperative prophylaxis and so on.

Gemclave DS Syrup should be taken as advised by your doctor. You may take it with your meals with ample water to avoid a stomach ache. All antibiotic therapies should be completed and not stopped midway, even if you feel well. It is best not to miss a dose, but if you do, do not compensate by taking twice the amount next time.

Side effects of Gemclave DS Syrup are usually minor and should not be of any concern. As it is an antibiotic, you may experience an upset stomach, diarrhoea and vomiting. Your doctor may also prescribe an acidity-regulating medicine (PPI such as pantoprazole) to counter these side effects.

This medicine may produce undesirable effects in people with colitis, severe liver/kidney diseases and allergies to either amoxicillin or clavulanic acid. Always let your doctor know of any health conditions you might have. Generally, this medicine is considered safe for most people.

It is also used in perforated appendicitis (rupture of the appendix), intra-abdominal infections (bacterial infections of the peritoneum), preoperative prophylaxis (antibiotics given before surgery to prevent bacterial infection) and UTI (urinary tract infections).

Your doctor will prescribe you Gemclave DS Syrup for a specific number of days after assessing the extent of the bacterial infection. To ensure proper recovery and prevent antibiotic resistance, you should complete the medication’s course and not miss a dose.

Gemclave DS Syrup is a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid, and they work together by killing the bacteria present in your body that are causing the infection. It is effective against bacteria such as H. influenza, E. coli, Listeria, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella, Enterococci and gram-negative cocci.

Amoxicillin is an extended-spectrum penicillin antibiotic. It works by preventing the bacteria that are susceptible to it from making a cell wall, thus effectively killing them. That is why it is called bactericidal penicillin, ‘-cidal’ here means ‘to kill’ or ‘killer’.

The reason why amoxicillin is combined with clavulanic acid is simple. In order to prevent amoxicillin from killing them, the bacteria produce an enzyme called beta-lactamases which stops certain penicillin antibiotics from working. Thus, alone, amoxicillin can’t be used to treat certain bacterial infections since it's rendered ineffective.

Clavulanic acid, the second ingredient in this combination drug, is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It means that it deactivates the bacterial enzymes, which prevent amoxicillin from working, which enables it to kill the bacteria it couldn’t kill on its own.

Together, amoxicillin and clavulanic acid are effective against beta-lactamase-producing organisms such as S. aureus, H. influenzae, E. coli, klebsiella, acinetobacter and enterobacter.
